Christmas 2012 Greetings

"So this is Christmas, and what have you done? Another year over, and new one's just begun." - John Lennon, "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)"

2012, a.k.a. the so-called year of the apocalypse. I'm still not buying the Mayans' warning.

Nevertheless, 2012 is coming to an end, and now we have to look toward 2013. Personally, this year has been nothing more than another ordinary year for me. It disappoints me to say that my goal to get Angelic Guardians: The Gathering signed by an agent has failed. I've had one nibble out of a pool of over 50 possible agents in my target genre, but even that nibble was thrown into the growing pile of rejection replies. The only good thing that came out of that experience was not hearing the words, "Frankly, you suck". Still, not one agent was interested in what could be the next best thing.

So, like many authors and artists, I went back and looked at the manuscript again. That was probably not the smartest move on my half because I'm a perfectionist. Then again, I saw a few things that could use some tweaking. Now, I started that back in late April/early May. Here it is... December, close to Christmas, and I'm now tweaking the last chapter.

But I'm not done. During the summer, my Toshiba crashed, and I resorted to my old MacBook that I had back in college to continue my writing. (thank God for flash drives!) I was doing pretty good until I was in the middle of tweaking Chapter 3 during my break at my night job, and I didn't safely remove the flash drive by the Mac protocol. So, my file got corrupted and lost. Thankfully, I've got backups... except I get to start over again, which is okay, considering I had an idea of where I wanted to go with that chapter.

Not only that, but I feel it's time to start incorporating the proper Japanese honorifics in the dialogue. It used to be that when Japanese manga was first translated into English, the honorifics were dropped because it would confuse readers. Nowadays, most translators are keeping the honorifics while including a translation or note page at the end of each issue. A prime example can be found in the re-release issues of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon by Kodansha Comics where Usagi (Bunny/Serena) refers to her Inner Senshi friends with -chan at the end of their first names, -san for her Outer Senshi allies (because they're older and not as close to her as the others), etc. I have two copies of #9 and #10 from the Tokyopop/Mixx release from back in 2005, and nowhere are the honorifics ever used in the English translation. Seven years of cultural and language understanding can make a difference, no?

As soon as I feel like I am ready to take on the world again, I will look into publishing companies before I go back to agents.

But at least The Gathering looks better this time around.

On a side note, I've been thinking about writing a Christmas television screepnplay or short story within the Angelic Guardians franchise set sometime between The Choice and The Revelations. What do you think about this: Rizu and Robu are about to celebrate their first Christmas together in their new apartment, but to Rizu, a decorated home isn't the same without a Nativity set like the one her parents had, which gives Robu an idea of what to get her for Christmas.

Meanwhile, Myoujou the Dark Demon travels back in time to the day when the Magi are warned about going back to Judea, where the king is plotting to kill baby Iesu in order to secure his throne, and successfully convinces them to continue on their way. History is rewritten, and by Christmas Eve in the present day, everything related to Iesu--carols, Nativity sets, and Christmas itself--disappears without a trace, only to be replaced by Christmas' other famous icon Santa Claus. Not just that, but the purpose of the Angelic Guardians is missing, and they're the only ones who know Christmas is something more than just the presents.

And because I think of the Grinch every time I envision Myoujou trying to thrwart Tamashii & co., "How the Dark Demon Stopped Christmas" somehow keeps coming back to me. What do you think? Good concept?

Thanks to those who have supported me in 2012. I hope you'll do the same in 2013. Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Happy Kwanzaa, and a Happy New Year to all.

The Next Big Thing (An Author's Blog Tour)

One of my close friends suggested that I do an author's blog tour as a way to promote the Angelic Guardians series. I've never done one before, but, hey, if it means a bit of shameless promotion, then I'm all for it! So, here we go.

What is the working title of your book?
Angelic Guardians: The Gathering

Where did the idea come from for the book?
Initially, I was practicing my manga drawing skills while I was in my sophomore year at Ball State University, and I decided to draw characters based on several people I knew (myself included) in a setting out of a magical girls franchise like Sailor Moon. Then, I thought about writing a story about them; I just never came up with a solid idea until I began my Religious Studies minor. By the end of my junior year, I knew what I wanted to do and which direction I wanted my book to go.

What genre does your book fall under?
Obviously fantasy/urban fantasy. There are a slew of religious themes, and the entire series is pro-Revelation, but because of the language, drugs, and sex that will be evident in later books, I wouldn't consider The Gathering and the installments to come as Christian. And while there is romance and drama, it's really more along the lines of fantasy.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
Rizu Hikarino (Liz Light)/Tamashii - Emma Watson
Gaburieru (Gabriel) - Hugo Weaving
Myoujou (Lucifer) - Alan Rickman
Kasushiusu (Cassius) - Jason Isaacs

As for Beronika Hoshino (Veronica Starr)/Medetai, Megu Hino (Meg Blaze)/Iinaka, Jeison Ankokuno (Jason Dark)/Shi, Deibiddo Fushimawashino (David Bard)/Inochi, and Robu Tsuchino (Rob Stone), I would rather have fresh new faces in the acting world to play these characters. I just need a strong actress to portray Rizu/Tamashii in order to get the critics' attention.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
The great battle between angels and demons is approaching, and the King of Heaven has chosen the world's biggest asocial loser to lead his holy army.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
I would rather be represented by an agency, but if I must invest in self-publishing, then I will.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
Honestly, I'd say about three years, getting started and all. Maybe less than that.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
I would say Harry Potter, but there are no wizards present in the series. Actually, the entire series is like the cousin to Sailor Moon because of its magical girl/boy plotline, but it's more geared toward adults. But I have given a nod to both Dante's Inferno and Milton's Paradise Lost, which are two of my favorite classics to read.

Who or What inspired you to write this book?
You can say that God told me to write The Gathering or perhaps the Devil himself (although I can't imagine why he would encourage me to do that when we all know how the series is going to end if you have read the book of Revelation... other than it might offend the church despite of its message). But, really, I wanted to do something anime and manga-like, and since I don't draw professionally, why not write and have someone draw it for me in time?

What else about your book might pique the readers’ interest?
Did I forget to mention that not only will The Gathering reflect on religion, but it sheds light on the mission of secret societies (the Illuminati, being one) and how they will later contribute to the rise of the Antichrist. So, if you're big into conspiracy theories or if you're wondering where our governments are taking us, this series is for you.

Perfection Goeth Before the Fall

Just when I thought I was done with The Gathering, I was forced to pull it back out and do some tweaking. Unfortunately, the tweaking is leading me to another round of editing.

Sorry, folks, but the agents aren't looking at me. There are a lot of factors going on, mainly the rise of The Hunger Games and the temporary farewell to supernatural/urban fantasy series. Keyword: temporary. We all know how these two genres of fiction tend to come around a decade later. That and being a new author, especially one who has never made networking connections at a writer's workshop, doesn't help much to my credibility.

So, that means it's time to move onto Plan B: the publishing companies. Whether or not I'll be signed by Christmas is another thing, but time is running out financially, and I'm about to make one last attempt with this project. Please keep me in your prayers or thoughts, whichever you choose, and let's hope that a company is interested with what I have to bring to the table. Honestly, I don't see how I can't get signed, but that's just me being bias.

"It is finished"...

Ever had that uplifting feeling when you feel proud of what you've accomplished? I have and for the very first time too. And I celebrated it with a victory lap around Cass County.

Yesterday was the official date both the original and English versions of Angelic Guardians: The Gathering were filed under "COMPLETE" on my flash drive. That's right. They're finished.

And I have to say that I was very pleased with how the plot turned out in the end. I knew before I thought about submitting The Gathering to an agent or publishing company, I had some rough spots to smooth out. Delete a few scenes, make the words flow, and touch up on some areas, and BOOM! I could not have asked for a better storyline.

Well, I could have, but that'll come later.

It felt good saving the final chapter of the English adaption one last time and putting the laptop away with a completed piece of work I began in my college years, knowing that I'm now ready to ask for an agent's helping hand toward publishing. It was like having a great weight being taken off my shoulders. Sure, I will admit that it does feel weird not sitting down in between jobs and spend my afternoons thinking about how can I make this book better, but I believe it's time to move forward and focus on the future.

Will The Gathering need more polishing? I'm sure, but definitely not as much as before. Thankfully, my parents are willing to support me financially and help me pay any editor that wants to take on this project. Aside from that, I'm ready to hand it over to someone who can get it on the shelves.

Thank you to everyone who followed me over the years. Next week starts another big project: writing a good query letter as part of my search for an agent. Keep me in your thoughts and prayers.

And as a reward for your faithfulness, the series' illustrator Erin Gentry sent me a pic of the lineart version for one of the covers. Enjoy!

Kinda reminds you of Sailor Moon, doesn't it? Mission accomplished.

Two Versions? No Way!

Earlier in my postings of The Gathering on Fiction Press, I received a critique from an annonymous reviewer which left me disgruntled as first but it gave me an idea.

Considering the Angelic Guardians and Angelic Guardians Beginnings series take place in Japan, it made sense for the characters to have Japanese names or Western names that have been translated to Japanese, but not every reader agreed to my thinking. They didn't like seeing key religious terms in romanji, and it confused those who were Christian or a particular Western religion. I even had one reader say that she would not buy my books because it looked like I was creating a new religion based on Christianity.

Seriously, why would I do that?

But I got to thinking... if popular anime and manga titles like Sailor Moon were dubbed and translated into English using Western names, why can't Angelic Guardians do the same?

So, in addition to the original Japanese story, each release will also have an English/Western adaption. Here's an example of what to expect:

  • Rizu Hikarino --> Liz Light
  • Beronika Hoshino --> Veronica Starr
  • Megu Hino --> Meg Blaze
  • Jeison Ankokuno --> Jason Dark
  • Deibiddo Fushimawashino --> David Bard
  • Robu Tsuchino --> Rob Stone
  • Raian Daishizenno --> Ryan Forrest
  • Ami Umino --> Amy Waterson
  • Shinmei --> God
  • Iesu --> Jesus
  • Gaburieru --> Gabriel
  • Myoujou --> Lucifer
  • Kasushiusu --> Cassius
  • Deiraira --> Delilah
  • Kureopatora --> Cleopatora
  • Medosa --> Medusa
  • Buruutasu --> Brutus
  • Judasu --> Judas
  • Kirisutokyou --> Christianity
  • Kurisuchan --> Christian
  • Mushiron --> Atheism
  • Mushinsha --> Atheist
However, names like Tamashii, Medetai, and so forth will not change due to the fact that the twelve Angelic Guardians are directly named after certain aspects such as soul, joy, love, death, life, etc. It'd be weird to go from Tamashii in Japan to Soul in America or England. Yeah. I'll stick with something more mystic.

So, to those who are complaining about their eyes hurting as they read my series, your wish has been granted.

And you know what that means, right? New artwork! My illustrator is spending time working hard on the original version, but she's looking forward to do an alternate verison for the English/Western release.

Needless to say, I'm looking forward to see it!

"All we are sayin' is give peace a chance..."

Well, since my last blog, shit hit the ceiling fan. Hard. To begin with, my laptop had a meltdown a few hours later and the harddrive crashed. But have no fear -- I managed to save the original files on my Mac, and the updated files online. However, any work and fan fiction that was on my Toshiba are gone. Forever. Ah well. Thank God for backups. Unfortunately, my Mac is out of date, so I'm limited in terms of online time.

I'm also more than halfway done touching up on The Gathering, but I wish I was further at this point. But I'm still doing good time-wise. I hope to get in contact with an agent by early 2012. Go me.

On a sadder note, I posted (and promoted) a new business that was coming to downtown Logansport. Unfortunately, Some Kind of Wonderful Books & Gifts has been abandoned. The article from the November 27, 2011 issue of the Pharos-Tribune said that the owner (Kitty Keswick) went back to California to be with her family, whereas a reliable source told me through the realtor that she had second thoughts. Regardless, this is a major blow to me.

I know that Christmas is coming around the corner for many of you, regardless if you see it as a day of Santa's gifts or God's Gift (Jesus, that is), but I do pay my respects to those that don't observe Christmas due to religious reasons. Happy (or Merry) Christmas to my Christian peeps, Happy Chanukah to my Jewish peps, Happy Kwanzaa to my black peeps, and to those who don't have a particular day of celebration at this time, Happy Holidays to you.

One last thing, usually I post a holiday special with the gang from Angelic Guardians, but since I lost the revised version of "Finding the Christmas Spirit" and I don't feel like stopping in the middle of my progress with The Gathering just to redo it, I'm gonna do something special next year. And you can thank Mr. Grinch for giving me the idea. I'll give you a clue as to why I'm thinking How the Grinch Stole Christmas: read the story of the Magi in Matthew 2 and see where Myoujou/Lucifer would twist it around.

Goodbye, 2011. Hello, 2012!

"Give thanks with a grateful heart..."

Yesterday in the US was a day of thanks. Many of us spent the afternoon with our loved ones around a giant cooked turkey at the table, while others (like myself) prepared for Christmas and watched a little bit of football (which, by the way, GO COWBOYS!). Don't worry... tomorrow, I'll get my turkey fix for the year. I even made an agreement with my future brother-in-law over the drumsticks. XD

Now, I don't have a lot to be thankful for... okay, so maybe I do: having parents who allowed me to come back home after college without charging rent, two jobs to keep the income flow going, friends who have my back no matter how far away they are, and, believe it or not, people who are interested with my progress concerning Angelic Guardians. To those who continue to follow me on Facebook, FanFiction.net, and FictionPress.com, THANK YOU!!! Your support has boosted me in dark times, and you have no idea how much it has helped. I'm hoping by next year around this time, you'll have included Angelic Guardians: The Gathering on your holiday wishlist. As for me, I'm hoping to be touching up on The Awakening and get it ready for publishing. I can't afford to leave all you fans hanging, can I?

Again, words cannot describe how much I am thankful to have fans like you. 2012 isn't gonna be the end of the world. Well, it might be the end of the world as we know it once I'm done, but it's gonna be our year for sure! Thank you and be careful on this Black Friday!

An Original "Angelic Guardians" Creepypasta!

A few days ago on YouTube, I came across a Pokémon hacked game called Pokémon Creepy Black (Cursed Black to all you aspiring game designers). To date, the concept is the best my 25-year-old self has ever seen: you have not one but TWO starting Pokémon (Bulbasaur/Charmander/Squirtle and an unknown Pokémon named Ghost in the form of one of the Pokémon Tower ghosts prior to receiving the Silph Scope), and, depending if you choose to use Ghost, you curse (actually, you kill) both Pokémon and trainers, including your rival during your last match (you know they're gone when you see a tombstone in their place after the battle). After defeating the Elite Four and your rival to become the Pokémon Champion, time passes by, there is no one left in the overworld (Mom's not even at the house when you finally arrive in Pallet Town, which implies she's passed on at this point), and it's your turn to join the others. You, as an old man, face Ghost without any Pokémon, items, or the option to run away. You use Struggle, but Ghost isn't affected by the attack and you're struck with recoil until you're down to 1 HP. Then... Ghost curses you. In the end, you die, and the screen goes black, much like the reality of our lifespan on earth. That final battle against Ghost is nothing more than your encounter with the Angel of Death or the Grim Reaper (whichever you prefer) who has come to take you away to your grave.

What I didn't know about the game was that while it was a hack, it was also a creepypasta. Okay... what IS a creepypasta? Creepypasta is an internet term used to create negative and uneasy feelings to readers in a similar reaction when you read Goosebumps. So, being the twisted person I tend to be, I found more Pokémon hacks based on these creepypastas (I totally recommend Lost Silver for those who are big fans of Unown and show major hatred toward Gold), and soon I became addicted. And if you want to see more of these creepypastas, go to the 6th Floor. There are lot of myths and stories that gave me and some of my friends chills.

Now, that being said, there is one Pokémon creepypasta that inspired me to write my own using my series. It's called "Hypno's Lullaby", which goes along the line of Hypno's Fire Red Pokédex entry: "It carries a pendulum-like device. There was once an incident in which it took away a child it hypnotized." Incidentally, there have been several videos made to bring this creepypasta to life to the tune of the Lavender Town Theme song. It's bad enough the Lavender Town Theme has unbelievable but freaky creepypastas written about the music and how it led to the mass suicides of children in Japan, but to combine it with "Hypno's Lullaby" only adds onto the implied pedophilia.

My creepypasta? I like to call this one "Paipa's Lullaby" (or "Piper's Lullaby" in the English/Western adaption). And who is Paipa? Paipa is a piper-demon who works for Deiraira (or Delilah to all you Yankees) in the first part of Angelic Guardians: The Awakening. His main mission is to search for Seijitsu's chosen vessel, but when he is first introduced, his M.O. was to kidnap the visiting children of Roganu Beach to lure the Angelic Guardians in that area out of hiding. Of course, this mission fails, but because Deiraira has favored him out of all her demons, she hands him the task to search and destroy (better yet, manipulate) Seijitsu.

Essentially, Paipa is very much like Hypno in their respective creepypastas: they take on the role of the fictional children's book character the Pied Piper and lead the children away from home through a certain form of brainwashing (Paipa --> his wooden flute; Hypno --> his pendulum) to their doom. And, so without further ado, here is my first attempt at writing a creepypasta. I hope you like it, and I totally recommend you listen to the Lavender Town Theme song while reading and reciting this poem. (And if you need help doing that, listen to "Hypno's Lullaby".)

Paipa's Lullaby

Here, little children, don’t be afraid

Paipa’s here with a tune to play

Away from bed where your head once laid

Mama and Papa won’t know you’re away

Dear little children, why so scared?

Paipa won’t touch a single hair

He loved you all when nobody cared

He won’t let you see just how life’s unfair

Dear little children, follow me

And hear my joyful melody

On my flute of wood I’ll play, you see

I bring happiness to everybody

Dear little children, won’t you come

To a great world with loads of fun

Free rides for all and candy for some

Always in the night and no need for sun

Dear little children, foolish you were

Left your beds for a tune you heard

An ageless fate you will now suffer

And slumber in my curse without a word

Angelic Guardians Music Library: Muse

Last week, I went down to Noblesville, IN, to see one of the greatest British bands of the 21st century: Muse. Yes, this is the same band that ended up being associated with the Twilight series all because Stephenie Meyer listened to them while writing her series. Frankly, I don't believe Muse should have been linked to sparkly vampires. If you listen to their last two albums (Black Holes and Revelations and The Resistance, respectively), you will agree that they fit better with Angelic Guardians than Twilight by a long shot.

Here's the reason: Muse's music has been tied to the government in an unconvential way... to the point that some people believe lead singer/guitarist Matthew Bellamy's political beliefs could hold some truth in light of the end of times. Songs like "Apocalypse Now", "Ruled by Secrecy", "United States of Eurasia", and, lest we forget their signature song, "Uprising" speak of what we know as the New World Order/Illuminati. And if you have read the book of Revelation and the Left Behind series, you know exactly where I'm going with this: only a one-world government, ruled by the alleged anti-Christ, could fulfill John's visions in Revelation where the Beast of the Earth is concerned.

Muse lead singer Matthew Bellamy doing his trademark "Eye of the Illuminati" gesture
during "Uprising" at the 2011 Grammy Awards,
which made its way onto national television.

I was later inspired to create this photomanipulation.
The right picture ought to be a graphic tee-shirt or hoodie.

It's no wonder Oasis and Beady Eyes' lead singer Liam Gallagher stated last month in a press release that he was "fucking scared of Muse". I can't say that I blame him. Take the lyrics to the song "Take a Bow", for instance. The song has inspired me to the point that if Angelic Guardians: The Revelations, pt. 2 ever becomes a live-action movie adaption, I will use Ian Cologne's symphonic version as the background music to Lucifer's coronation prior to the neo-Holocaust.

"Corrupt, you corrupt and bring corruption to all that you touch.
Hold, you'll behold and be holden for all that you've done.
And spell, cast a spell, cast a spell on the country you run,
And risk, you will risk, you will risk all their lives and their souls.
And burn, you will burn,
You will burn in Hell, yeah, you'll burn in Hell,
You'll burn in Hell, yeah, you'll burn in Hell for your sins...

Death, you bring death and destruction to all that you touch.
Pay, you must pay, you must pay for the crimes against the earth.
Hex, feed the hex, feed the hex on the country you love,
And beg, you will beg, you will beg for their lives and their souls.
And burn, you will burn,
You will burn in Hell, yeah, you'll burn in Hell,
You'll burn in Hell, yeah, you'll burn in Hell,
You'll burn in Hell, yeah, you'll burn in Hell for you sins."

(Did I not tell you how scary some of their music really is?)

I don't know what Meyer was smoking when she wrote Twilight, but Muse should have never been spotlighted as THE band for her series. Thankfully, I was intrigued by them when I saw their performance at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards where they performed "Uprising" for the first time on American TV. It might have been the killer teddy bears that did the trick, but the song's lyrics (after I Googled them up) spoke to me. That was when I knew Muse was the band, along with Nine Inch Nails and, later on, Radiohead, to include in the Angelic Guardians soundtracks.

Now that I got the Twilight-bashing off my chest, I can continue with my review. Anyway, the trip to Noblesville was my second Muse experience. Honestly, if you haven't seen them live before, DO IT! They will wind up somewhere on your Top 5 Best Concerts list. They've never disappointed their fans before, and they're bound to wow you after that first concert. Believe me, one of my friends tagged along, and after the concert, she asked me if we could stop by her house in Indy real quick so she can copy my albums onto her computer.

I was lucky to record some songs on my new digital camera, but the camera died right at the end of  "Knights of Cydonia", and I accidentally deleted "Uprising" the next morning when I was reviewing my pics! (And that was THE best video ever!) But I did get away with "Hysteria", "Starlight", and, my favorite part of their tours, "Plug in Baby". The videos are on YouTube and on my Facebook account, but I'll post them here for your pleasure. Forgive me for the sound, especially at the beginning of PiB.

Robu Tsuchino: The Good, the Bad, and the Badass.

Robu Tsuchino/Seijitsu (center) and his Japanese parallels:
Chibiusa/Rini (with Black Lady/Wicked Lady, left)
and the Dragon Ranger/Green Ranger (right)

(Click here to listen to the MIDI version of "Sailor Senshi Doushi no Taitirtu"
as you're reading this blog. This would totally be Seijitsu's theme if it wasn't already taken!
Note: you will need to right-click on the link
and select "Open in New Tab"/"Open in New Window" in order to stay on this page!)

If there is one character in the Angelic Guardians series that I think will steal Rizu/Tamashii's spotlight more than any other member of the Angelic Guardians squad, it'd have to be the star of Angelic Guardians: The Awakening: Robu Tsuchino.

Also known as Seijitsu.

Robu was designed after a very special friend of mine since the summer of 2005. In fact, our story was thrown into the storylines for The Gathering and The Awakening, including the place where we worked and some of our family members and coworkers. Like Robu Tsuchino, he was a big sci-fi nerd and he was the only guy I knew who was still playing Pokémon video games. (Nerdom was not accepted in my graduating class, which sucked for me.)

Now, throw in a few personalities and backgrounds of notable characters in Japanese entertainment, and you have the perfect leading male character to rival his female counterpart, which is exactly what makes Robu just as loveable as Rizu but less whiny and fangirly.

(Although, he does hold his own when it comes to his secret love for Pōwā Senshi, the Angelic Guardians ripoff to Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger (or the first season of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers). He received a giant collection of Dinodroids and Megadroids from his cousin Matu Hiro when Matu grew out of his nerd phase, and he claims the Green Senshi (Dragon Ranger/Green Ranger, respectively) is the best Pōwā Senshi there ever was. Clearly, his favorite Droid is none other than the Dragondroid (Dragon Caesar/Dragonzord), which can still be found in his bedroom to this day.)

Robu is first seen in The Gathering as a sharp-tongued, arrogant, Gothic nerd who has no interest in religion. He often chastises Rizu for her foot-in-mouth comments, but he also shows a great concern for her whenever she feels troubled. He only makes two appearances throughout the book, which makes him a minor character but a minor character that would soon change the paradigms of the Angelic Guardians series as we know it.

His grand return to Roganu in Angelic Guardians: The Awakening puts Rizu in a difficult situation when Paipa, one of the two boss demons of the book, strikes Roganu Beach by kidnapping children in the middle of the night and placing an eternal sleep curse over them. Rizu knows Paipa is carrying out Myoujou's latest scheme, but because he understands that their jobs are on the line, Robu plans to rescue the children himself, which eventually prompts both Rizu and Deibiddo/Inochi to reveal their secret to him in their first battle against Paipa.

Robu's involvement in The Awakening parallels with two other characters many fans of 90's Japanese children entertainment may recall. The first character is Usagi "Chibiusa" Chiba/Rini, better known as Chibimoon/Mini Moon in Sailor Moon. Elements of Sailor Moon R and Sailor Moon SuperS were the foundation of The Awakening, mainly because both arcs (excluding the story of the Makaiju/Doom Tree in the anime of Sailor Moon R) focused on Chibiusa as the main character. Chibiusa would be a better candidate to draw similarities from when comparing with Rizu, but it's her story from these two arcs that parallels with Robu's in The Awakening.

Parallel #1: Robu vs. Chibiusa
- Both Robu and Chibiusa discovered the secret identities of their future teammates before becoming Chosen Ones themselves.
- They were the youngest members of their respective corps at the time of their initiation. (Robu --> 18; Chibiusa --> 5 (manga), 6 or 7 (Sailor Moon S anime)) This soon changed when ChibiChibi/Sailor ChibiChibi was introduced in Sailor Moon Sailor Stars, although ChibChibi was not a real child in the end. In the manga, she is really Sailor Cosmos in disguise, and in the anime, she is the Star Seed of Sailor Galaxia, which hints she was "created" instead of being born.
- They share a deep connection with the dream world and its magical guardians. (Robu --> Seiji; Chibiusa --> Pegasus)
- They become the enemy in the same arc they are first viewed as the main character. (Robu --> Dark Seijitsu; Chibiusa --> Black Lady/Wicked Lady)
- They have at least one attack that causes little damage but can serve as a huge distraction. (Robu --> Slingshot Toss (which will be introduced in Angelic Guardians: The Return); Chibiusa --> Pink Sugar Heart Attack (anime only))
- They have a friendly (and sometimes sibling-like) rivalry with the protagonist but with good reason. (Sadly, I'm not in the position to tell you Robu's reason at the moment. Let's just say I'd be giving away a huge spoiler for future installments.)

The second character that Robu mirrors quite often in Angelic Guardians is the Dragon Ranger/Green Ranger himself. Now I will say that Burai (Zyuranger) and Tommy Oliver (MMPR) were two different men possessing the Dragon Coin, and the fate of these two men differed greatly. Although both Burai and Tommy gradually lost their powers thanks to Bandora/Rita Repulsa, whom they served under prior to joining the Zyuranger/Power Rangers, Burai died and Tommy reemerged as the White Ranger in the second season of MMPR, using the Kibaranger costume from Gosei Sentai Dairanger (and, yes, I'm still disappointed with Haim Saban for not bringing over the other five costumes when the second season of MMPR was being produced).

Still, the Dragon Ranger/Green Ranger proved to be the greatest rival the Tyrannoranger/Red Ranger had ever faced, which could be said the same in light of Rizu/Tamashii and Robu/Seijitsu. Robu is basically Rizu's male counterpart but with a bad attitude. They are equally matched in intelligence and combat, and like Zyuranger/MMPR, Rizu shares ownership with Robu over his familiar Seiji, much like the Tyrannoranger/Red Ranger after inheiriting Dragon Caesar/Dragonzord, the Dragon Dagger, and the Dragon Shield following the departure of the Dragon Ranger/Green Ranger (even though the Green Ranger reunites with the Power Rangers and is given full control over his prized possessions once more until Lord Zedd strips him of what's left of his powers).

Parallel #2: Robu vs. Dragon Ranger/Green Ranger
 - Both Robu and the Dragon Ranger/Green Ranger are tricked by a deceiving female antagonist to fight against their own kind. (Robu --> Robu is kissed by Deiraira's mortal counterpart Di and brainwashed by the poison on her lips; Dragon Ranger/Green Ranger --> Bandora/Rita Repulsa kidnaps the Dragon Ranger/Green Ranger and uses her magic on him to kill the Zyuranger/Power Rangers)
  • Ironically enough, they are both the sixth senshi to join their corps, and they were used at one point to play the role as the enemy.
- Their biggest rival in battle is the main character of their respective franchises. (Robu --> Rizu/Tamashii; Dragon Ranger/Green Ranger --> Tyrannoranger/Red Ranger)
- They share leadership with the head senshi of their corps. (self-explanatory)
- They redeem themselves for their treachery through a great sacrifice. (Robu --> Rizu/Tamashii gives herself to Deiraira in exchange for Robu/Seijitsu's soul, which gives Robu/Seijitsu the motivation to prove himself as a true Angelic Guardian to the others; Dragon Ranger/Green Ranger --> Dragon Ranger/Green Ranger risks the last hour of his existence to save the other Zyuranger/Power Ranger from their doom, but time expires and he loses his powers and, in the case of Zyuranger, his life.)
- Their favorite damsel in distress wears pink. (Robu --> Rizu/Tamashii; Dragon Ranger/Green Ranger --> Pteraranger/Pink Ranger (although the Dragon Ranger never had any romantic interest for the Pteraranger in Zyuranger. That was all MMPR, baby.))

It's sad to say not many active male characters such as Robu Tsuchino appear in modern-day literature. (That is, if you're not counting a certain Boy Wizard who captured our hearts over ten years ago.) Still, no matter who Robu is compared to, whether it's Chibiusa or the Dragon Ranger/Green Ranger, he'll forever be remembered as the Angelic Guardian who made nerdom sexy, dangerous, and cool.

Japanese Rastafarianism: A Not-So Farfetched Idea After All

As I was revising Angelic Guardians: The Memory last night, a sudden thought struck me. I had designed the character Raian Daishizenno/On'ai based on my old high school crush, but the inspiration had no interest in attending church while we attended school together, and he was a huge pothead. Moreover, he was also a hardcore Bob Marley fan. So, after learning more about Marley's religious background in college, I created Raian to represent Rastafarianism but with the acceptance of Jesus' second coming instead of Ras Tafari's, which ultimately makes Raian a Messianic Rastafarian.

Doesn't seem to be much of a problem, right? Wrong. Not only is Raian a Rasta, but he's also a Japanese Rasta. Sounds like a contradiction, doesn't it? Japanese? Rastafarian? They don't look right, and they certainly don't sound right.

Actually, it makes complete sense! I came across a website concerning Rastafarianism around the world (you can find it at http://www.howtogrowbud.com/info/rastafari/ ), and with a coexist country like Japan, it was no surprise I found this paragraph:

A small but devoted Rasta community developed in Japan in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Rasta shops selling natural foods, Reggae recordings, and other Rasta-related items sprang up in Tokyo, Osaka, and other cities. For several years, “Japan Splashes” or open-air Reggae concerts were held in various locations throughout Japan. For a review by two sociologists of how the Japanese Rasta movement can be explained in the context of modern Japanese society, see Dean W. Collinwood and Osamu Kusatsu, “Japanese Rastafarians: Non-Conformity in Modern Japan,” The Study of International Relations, No. 26, Tokyo: Tsuda College, March 2000 (research conducted in 1986 and 1987).

And given the fact that Raian was born in Tokyo in 1988, linking him with Rastafarianism/Messianic Rastafarianism only seems natural despite of his Japanese heritage. It's unclear, however, if such religion still exists in Japan today. If so, then let The Memory shed some light onto it through Raian Daishizenno.

Now if you will excuse me, I think I'm hearing "One Love/People Great Ready" on the radio.

Why "Angelic Guardians" Should Not Be Considered a Pro-Christianity Series, pt. 1

Now before I get all you Christians upset with me because of the title of this entry, it's due to the fact that I just got back from hearing a little bit of my preacher's views on escatology (aka the study of Christ's return) and I'm slightly enlightened by my progress. Needless to say, I have a very different view of both escatology and Hell based on what I've studied and what I've learned through the works of Dante and John Milton.

As some of you are aware, the exterior concept of Angelic Guardians is based on a combination of the books of Daniel and Revelation as well as the New World Order/Illuminati theory. Translation: a political view of the end of the world with a religious twist. This creeps up in the sixth and final book of the Angelic Guardians arc where Nikusa and the Demonic Guardians of the Seven Deadly Sins make their formal appearance while Myoujou's mortal counterpart Lucifer is chosen to become the leader of the New World Order and issues two major neo-Holocausts to eliminate the "impurities" of the world (first the followers of the kurisuchan faith, then those who still refuse to take the number regardless of any faith). The mass execution is what I've translated out of Matthew 24:9 ("Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me") and Revelation 13:15-17 ("[The beast out of the earth] was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that it oculd speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name").

(Warning: Angelic Guardians: The Revelations is gonna be gruelsome and offensive when you get to the second part. This will not be suited for immature audiences.)

Now, there are very few things I believe in concerning escatology, mainly the fact that the Christ will return. However, after tonight's Q&A session, I've come terms that I am a post-tribulationist. What does that mean? I believe that we will go through the seven-year tribulation period together without experiencing the rapture, that we will face the thousand years of peace, and that we will see the return of Christ all at once after all of that has passed.

This is why I have personally omitted the rapture and the multiple resurrections of the dead from Revelation out of my belief system and the Angelic Guardians series (Revelation 7, 20:1-6, and 20:11-15, for those who wish to follow where I'm heading with this). Why raise the dead and judge them again if they've already been accepted into Heaven or perished in the Lake of Fire? The idea comes across to me a very vague way. It's like God is planning to kick you out of your mansion or give you false hope for redemption just because there's a new Earth and Heaven on the way, and it's expected of you go through the process of elimination again, only this time you're perished forever if you have to be thrown into the Lake of Fire one last time. It doesn't make sense. When you've been accepted into Heaven or Hell, you're accepted for eternity. There's no point of resurrecting the dead when you know their fate has already been sealed. It's moot.

(And if you think it's God's way of giving the damned a second chance to redeem themselves, let me ask you this: why should he if he didn't the first time? You fool God once, he won't let you fool him again.)

I would have brought up my views to the table had I not attended a church where the congregation will hold you over the fire by your feet if you say something wrong about the government. I really wanted to ask the preacher if the New World Order/Illuminati had any relation to the rise of the beast out of the earth since I believe a worldwide government would be the only way a neo-Holocaust could ever happen. How else would you get every nation to hand over the Christians to their doom if pro-Christian governments around the world refuse to do so as long as their leaders remain in office? Logically, you can't unless you've conquered the country and removed the figurehead of the government. I'm under the impression that the antichrist, or even a shadow of the antichrist, will be in the guise of the chosen leader of the New World Order.

And you wonder why I've stopped supporting the governments? Because I don't trust the politicians and the figureheads of any country. The only reason why I still pay my taxes is because I have to if I want to stay out of prison. Financial philanthropy within the community is one thing (if it means making my hometown a bigger and better community, then I'll give back), but giving money to the government against my freedom is another.

(But then again, I do like that hefty tax return check...)

Another thing that bothered me a lot tonight was this chart that was given to me concerning Heaven and Hell. Like all other Christians, I used to think of Hell as fire and brimstone. Then I read The Inferno by Dante and Paradise Lost by John Milton in my senior year of high school. Now I know such literary works should not be taken seriously because nine times out of ten, they are full of false views, but sometimes, I just can't help but wonder if there was some kind of truth behind them.

This chart ignored a lot of things that I believe are in Hell. Mind you, I don't believe in the nine rings of Purgatory, nor do I believe in the nine rings of Heaven, but I have accepted the nine rings of Hell, the city of Pandemonium, Lake Cocytus, and even the river Styx in Greek mythology, all of which are believed to be fictional places due to mainstream religion. The only thing about Hell that I agree within the Bible is the Lake of Fire, but I have a different view of it unlike how Revelation 20:7-10 describes it. I see it as more of the entrance to your eternal prison (the nine rings of Hell) with the Infernal Judge of Damnation (Lucifer, Satan, Beelzebub, etc.) sitting on his icy throne in Lake Cocytus in the ninth ring with your assigned cell waiting for you somewhere in the rings according to the greatest or average sin you've committed in your life.

To me:

  • The nine rings serve like a federal prison camp starting with the least sin all the way down to the deadliest of them all (ninth ring/Lake Cocytus: traitors).
  • Pandemonium is like the infernal counterpart to the streets of Heaven where the demons and fallen angels reside as a reward from Lucifer for their allegiance in the first Holy War.
  • The Styx is both the realm known as limbo (which doesn't exist in Protestantism, but there are a few things the Bible fails to mention regarding to the fate of those who were faithful to God prior to Jesus' earthly birth (i.e.: King Deibiddo (King David) will make an appearance in Angelic Guardians: The Return as a soul swimming aimlessly in the Styx because he had died centuries before Jesus' time, although his adultery might have also cost him his ticket to Heaven) as well as the infernal opposite of the River of Life (Revelation 22:1-6).

Do I have a twisted view of escatology? Definitely. Do I have a twisted view of Hell? Without a doubt. Do I expect the church to support my series because of what I believe? Not at all. I won't be surprised to see my books on the list of banned books in the Catholic church either, even though I'm practically giving the same message as the other churches but in favor of the, dare I say it, Christian sinners. And I won't be surprised to see Protestant preachers, including my own, rally against my work to preserve the old-school views either.

I will eventually post the second part of this entry... probably when my preacher gives a sermon against Christian sinners and/or the coexist movement. But that's an entirely different rant.

Character Spotlight: Gaburieru/Geiburieru (Gabriel)... the next Dumbledore?

Ah, the joys of being a writer (and a blogger) with a wireless connection... I can sit outside in my screen room and take in the cool breeze while working on my books or writing a new entry.

Got to take a quick sip of the Coke. Much better.

Anyway, I decided to dedicate an entry in honor of everybody's favorite archangel Gabriel. You know... God's messenger who told Mary that she would give birth to Jesus? Totally reminds me Hermes/Mercury in mythology. Damn crossovers.

Now if you have read a little bit of my series Angelic Guardians, you know that Gabriel plays a mentor-like role to Tamashii and her team. In this case, he is known as Gaburieru (or Geiburieru in my earlier drafts... I just recently decided to stick with the Hebrew phonetics instead of the common English error (Gah-bree-el, not Gei-bree-el)), and he is responsible for the safety of the Five (Tamashii, Medetai, Iinaka, Shi, and Inochi) as well as Tamashii's former team in Roganu (which included On'ai before Mikaeru (Michael, which will be translated accordingly to his Hebrew pronunciation Mee-ka-el) took him under his wings (literally) and trained him and Waraku prior to their transfer to Oukan University in Angelic Guardians: The Memory).

But being a mentor seems to be Gaburieru's favorite job. He likes to spend time on earth and assimilate into mankind, and he loves to tease Rizu and the others nonstop.

(excerpt from The Memory, using Gaburieru's original name Geiburieru)

“I see you’ve already had quite a reunion tonight,” [Geiburieru] continued as he led [Rizu and her friends] toward his office on the other side of the circulation desk.
“Not much of a one,” sighed Rizu. “We haven’t had much time to talk about business.”
“Oh?”
“I invited my cousin Ami for dinner, and we kept the whole demon-fighting thing out of the picture,” explained Megu.
“Wise decision, Megu. And just how is Ami doing now that’s she back in Oukan?” asked Geiburieru.
            “You know her?” asked Megu.
“I’m an angel! I know everything about everybody on this planet! And just for the record, you really ought to stop putting words in people’s mouths where they don’t belong. You thoroughly embarrassed Ami tonight, no?”
Megu’s face turned red with embarrassment as her friends laughed softly to themselves. “You just love to make my life miserable, don’t you?” she grumbled.
“Angel, Megu, not a demon. I don’t make lives miserable just for fun.”

And let's not forget that even angels can pick up a vice or two. For Gaburieru, it's tea.

(another excerpt from The Memory)

Rizu frowned and felt her shoulders slump from the great weight of disappointment that had fallen on her. “He’s not here,” she mumbled.
“I wouldn’t be so sure if I were you,” called a voice near the restrooms.
Sitting in front of the new library café by the metal detectors was Geiburieru with a plastic cup of freshly brewed tea in his hands. “Although I was starting to believe you five would wait until the last second to visit me,” he added.
“Already becoming a patron to the café, are we?” jested Jeison.
“It’s not as good as the tea I make in my office,” admitted Geiburieru dryly, “but it wouldn’t look good if a librarian didn’t support the newest annex. And, really, I ought to stop resorting to tea as my one and only drink here on earth. I find it as addicting as coffee is to you young ones.”
He took a quick sip, which earned him a few chuckles from the quintet, and rose to his feet.

But even underneath his humorous personality, he knows when it's time to be serious and put Rizu and her friends back on the right track.

(excerpt from The Awakening)

“Rizu, it’s not that I don’t want you to live a normal life when a demon isn’t around, but you can’t go off and show your abilities to every friend you make! You never know who is on your side or who your enemy is until you’ve seen their true colors!”
“I had no other choice! Robu wanted Deibiddo and me to go with him just in case something happened to him while we were looking for those missing children! He was going to find out my secret sooner or later!”
Geiburieru sighed heavily and shook his head. “I’ve just been a bit concerned about your priorities as of now. I don’t know if telling Robu the truth was a good idea just because he’s your best friend.”
“I’m fine. I’ll be okay. As Rizu Hikarino, I have a plan. I’ll graduate from Oukan University, get a job, and get away from this hellhole. That’s it.”
“Whatever happened about getting married? Isn’t having a family of your own part of your lifelong dream?”
“I don’t see that happening any time soon,” said Rizu sadly. “It seems like I’m destined to end my family line with just me, myself, and I.”
I seriously doubt that will ever happen, thought Geiburieru. “And what about your priorities as Tamashii?”
“To destroy every demon that crosses my path, defeat Myoujou, and fulfill the last of the prophecies,” muttered Rizu. “You’ve pretty much drilled that one into my head from the start.”
“That I did,” admitted Geiburieru. “Unfortunately, what you want in one life might not be the right thing for you in the other. I never told you when you accepted this destiny that there would be choices that you have to make that would be pleasing to both you and Tamashii, but I’m afraid you had to learn the hard way through your pursuits with Jeison and Deibiddo.”
            “They didn’t want me, Geiburieru.”
“They didn’t want you when they were Shi and Inochi either. They knew better.”
“But what about Robu? It seems like I can’t be with any Angelic Guardian as it is, but are you trying to not let me be with a mortal too?”
“I never said you couldn’t!” argued Geiburieru. “But I do think that it would be wise not to get yourself involved with someone with such a secret like yours! Think about the stories in mythology about the kami fawning over a mortal maiden. Most of those kami hid their secrets from their lovers, but when those truths were revealed, the maidens took their lives out of fear.
“Angels, Rizu, are no exception to this rule. If an angel came down to earth, dwelled among men in disguise for quite some time, and then revealed his or her true identity, tragedy would be inevitable because the fearful man associates angels with death and Shinmei. He fears that his time would soon be over in a matter of days, perhaps minutes.”
“But isn’t Shi the one who usually scares the shit out of man?” joked Rizu lightly.
“Only when man isn’t sure of his eternal fate. No, Rizu, Shi isn’t the only angel to scare man to death. Any angel can wield the ability to create a life-changing moment for a mortal, and mankind is generally scared of change,” replied Geiburieru with a sigh. “You’re no different yourself. I’m afraid that you’re incapable to—what was that phrase again?—roll with the punches. You’re scared about so many things as if you’re worried that your world is going to come crashing around you! I don’t want you think of it like that, but there are going to be changes happening from here on out. I just hope that these changes are for the best, depending on the choices you make in either life.
“So, let me ask you this: with your two different sets of priorities, one as Rizu and one as Tamashii, where does Robu stand in the picture?”
Rizu could feel the blood in her veins turned cold, and she became paralyzed with fear like a child being caught with a hand in the cookie jar. “I… I don’t know,” she choked. “He means so much to me now matter who I am, Geiburieru, but I don’t know where to put him.”
“I was afraid you’d say that,” said Geibuieru. “Rizu, I’m not telling you to give up on Robu. I know deep down he means good to you, but right now, we’ve got a war on our hands that will take years to finish. You need to focus on what’s going on around you and not too much on the matters of the heart. You also have a mission that needs to be completed before the summer is over. Seijitsu is still on the run, and time is short.”
“What about Robu?” asked Rizu. “Where is he in Shinmei’s blueprint for me?”
Geiburieru bit his lower lip. “I’m sorry, Rizu. You know that I can’t tell you your future. But if there is one thing I know about your situation, it’s that you have to trust your instincts. You’ll find the answers to your questions about Robu or any other man within them.”
Wiping away the few teardrops that were falling from the corner of her eyes, Rizu asked, “How will I know, though, Geiburieru?”
“Listen to your heart, Rizu. If you believe what you feel is right inside, then don’t stray from that path. Your faith will get stronger, and you will soon come to know it was exactly what Shinmei had planned for you."

And he also knows when it's time to take charge and fight.

(excerpt from The Gathering)

As she turned the corner of the west wing, Tamashii looked over her shoulder and saw the she-demon flying reaching out for her. She suddenly felt herself being pushed against the wall, and she was soon trapped by the she-demon’s massive weight. “You should have never done that, you stupid Angelic Guardian!” hissed the she-demon as her nails extended out into razor-sharp claws. “Now it’s time to pay the consequences!”
Expecting to be slit at her throat, Tamashii turned her head to the side as she silently prayed for help, but when the alleged slash did not touch her, she opened one eye to see the she-demon being assaulted by a flaming sword at her neck. “Ouch! That burns!” cried out the she-demon in pain.
“Let her go!” growled Geiburieru from behind as he placed the sword closer to the monster’s skin and tightened his grip on her.
The she-demon dropped Tamashii and took a step back with her fearful eyes still glued on Geiburieru’s sword. “I let the brat go! What more do you want?” she asked.
“Give back the souls to those from whom you have stolen!” ordered Geiburieru.
            “Never!”
“Suit yourself!” said the archangel as he raised his sword to slice off the she-demon’s head.
And, yes, even angels can love and mourn for the loss of a loved one.

(excerpt from The Awakening)

“I think the same can be said about you,” said Geiburieru knowingly, “but we all know that it’s human nature to not act like ourselves when something as deep as love touches the heart. We do irrational things without thinking about the circumstances, and we find ourselves in over our heads.”
“And how would you know this? You’re an angel!” cried Rizu. “You’re not supposed to fall in love!”
“Where did you get such notion?” asked Geiburieru.
“Well, it was never mentioned in the seisho that Shinmei had his angels go to earth to find a mate!”
“And it was never mentioned that Shinmei had his angels search all through Heaven to find a mate either,” added Geiburieru. “How would man know a thing or two about Heaven? It’s more than just worshipping Shinmei! It’s paradise after death! It’s also a reunion with your loved ones!
“Contrary to popular belief, angels have the capability to love. It might be a different kind of love, but it still has the same message. Now, I had in my existence a few female angels that I loved dearly, one of whom was my eternal best friend. She was what you would call a girlfriend, and I felt more connected to her than my brothers and sisters. We had both given our loyalty to Shinmei, and we were very much devoted to our King.
“Then, the war between Shinmei and Myoujou changed everything. We had lost many on both sides despite of our victory, but Myoujou took several of our best angels down with him as prisoners of war when he was cast our of Heaven. Sadly, my love was one of those victims, and word got to me that she had been destroyed in one of the lower rings of Hell. The demons raped her and tortured her for hours until she had her wings ripped off and a dagger was driven into her body.
“My surviving brothers and sisters heard about her death, but it was I who took it the hardest. After I received the news, I dedicated myself solely to my purpose. I could have loved another again, but with this war quickly approaching us, I don’t want to take another risk until I know that there is no more evil left in this world to destroy the goodness of Shinmei.”

Last but not least, my favorite side of Gaburieru: the gentle sympathizer.

(excerpt from The Memory)
“I just wish there was a way we can all work together,” said Rizu. “We’re all Angelic Guardians; we’re one of the same! There shouldn’t be a need to separate ourselves just because we think differently!”
Geiburieru cracked a small smile and said softly, “You’re a sweet girl, Rizu. If only the others could be more like you.”

Oh, Gaburieru, you never cease to amaze me with your many personalities. If I didn't know better, I'd say he's nothing more than angelic version of a certain Muggle-candy loving wizard. You know, the more that I think about it (and the more I write this character), Gaburieru could possibly be Dumbledore's newest rival in fantasy literature.
